Lawn Suits Guide: Fabric, Prints and Summer Care Tips

Ask any Pakistani woman what summer feels like and she will probably mention two things: the heat, and the excitement of new lawn. Every year brands release their summer lawn collections with a wave of prints, colours and embroidery, and every year we fill our wardrobes with a few new favourites. But what is lawn, why is it so loved, and how do you make a good lawn suit last more than one season? Here is everything we have learned from selling and wearing lawn for years.

What is lawn fabric?

Lawn cloth is a plain-weave fabric traditionally made from fine cotton yarn. The yarn is spun tightly and woven closely, which gives lawn its smooth surface and slightly crisp feel. Because the threads are fine, the fabric is light and lets air pass through easily — exactly what you want when the temperature crosses forty degrees.

The name is believed to come from the French town of Laon, an old centre of linen weaving. Today Pakistan is one of the best-known producers of printed lawn in the world, and the summer lawn season has become a fashion event in its own right.

Why lawn works so well in Pakistani summers

Types of lawn you will see in shops

Printed lawn

The everyday favourite. Prints range from small florals to bold geometric patterns. Digital printing allows very detailed designs with many colours, while screen printing gives strong, flat colours. Our block print lawn pieces add a hand-made feel inspired by traditional block printing.

Embroidered lawn

Embroidered lawn adds thread work on the neckline, front panel or sleeves. It instantly makes a summer suit feel festive and is perfect for Eid lunches or daytime weddings. Look for neat stitches with no loose threads on the back.

Lawn with chiffon or voile dupatta

Many three piece lawn suits pair a lawn shirt with a lighter chiffon, voile or net dupatta. This keeps the outfit airy while adding some drape and elegance.

How to judge lawn quality before buying

When you shop online you cannot touch the fabric, so read the description carefully. A few signs of good lawn:

At Fozia Naheed every product page lists what is included, and you can always message us on WhatsApp for extra pictures before you order.

Caring for lawn so it lasts

Lawn is cotton, and cotton rewards gentle care. Follow these simple steps and your favourite suit will look fresh for several summers.

First wash

Wash new lawn separately the first time, in cold water. Some dark prints may release a little dye at first; washing alone protects your other clothes. Adding a spoon of salt or white vinegar to the first rinse can help set the colour.

Regular washing

Drying

The Pakistani summer sun is strong enough to fade even good prints. Dry lawn in the shade, or inside out if you must use direct sunlight, and bring it in as soon as it is dry.

Ironing

Iron lawn while it is still slightly damp, on medium heat. Iron embroidered areas from the reverse side with a thin cloth on top so the threads stay raised and shiny.

Styling lawn beyond the basic suit

Lawn is not only for matching three piece suits. Try a printed lawn kurta with a plain white trouser for a fresh office look, or pair a lawn shirt with straight jeans on a casual weekend. A solid dupatta can tone down a busy print, while a printed dupatta brings a plain shirt to life. For more ideas, read our guide on styling a 3 piece suit.

Building a small lawn wardrobe

You do not need twenty suits to enjoy the season. Five or six well-chosen pieces cover most summer days: two printed everyday suits in light colours, one darker print that hides the dust of travel, one embroidered suit for Eid and dawats, and one or two separate kurtas you can wear with white trousers. Add a couple of plain dupattas and you will have an outfit for almost every invitation.

When does the lawn season start?

Most brands launch their main summer lawn collections between February and April, with follow-up “volumes” through May and June and festive lawn just before Eid. The best prints often sell out within weeks, so if you see a design you love, it is worth ordering early. Keep an eye on our New Arrivals for fresh drops and on the Summer section for the full range.

Frequently asked questions

Does lawn shrink?

Good quality lawn shrinks very little, but cotton can shrink slightly on the first wash, especially in hot water. Many tailors recommend soaking unstitched lawn in water and drying it before stitching.

Is lawn see-through?

Fine lawn is light, and very pale colours can be slightly sheer. Ask your tailor for a lining in white or cream shirts, or choose medium and dark shades for complete coverage.

Can lawn be worn in winter?

Lawn is designed for heat. In winter it works as a layer under a shawl or cardigan, but warmer fabrics such as khaddar, linen and karandi are more comfortable. See our winter collection for those.

Lawn is more than a fabric in Pakistan — it is the sound of summer arriving. Choose a print that makes you smile, look after it well, and it will stay a favourite for years.
